If you remember a few months ago, I wrote a piece on Section 7 of House Bill 44 called Direct Hit Against Bike Lanes. Well, we (the NC cycling community) were successful in getting that language removed from the bill!
Section 7 of the HB 44 would have restricted counties and municipalities from implementing road diets on any road with more than 20k commuters daily and it would have conflicted with our state’s Complete Streets program — an effort by the NCDOT to incorporate cycling, walking, and public transit into infrastructure projects.
I’m pretty sure if you’re reading this, I don’t need to explain that this was a big deal and took a lot of effort from a lot of great people, but I will. THIS WAS A BIG DEAL! A special thanks to everyone who emailed or called your representative to voice your concern. Our representatives heard us and were able to accommodate our requests: Let us be in charge of our own roads!
We will now return you to your regularly scheduled program. Continue riding your bike as if nothing happened, but it did.
