Adjusting a New Rear Derailleur

This video will help you do the adjustments after the derailleur and the chain have been installed.

How-to install or adjust a rear derailleur

*when increasing cable tension at the barrel adjuster, turn the barrel to the left. when decreasing cable tension at the barrel adjuster, turn the barrel to the right.

Troubleshooting:

Chain won’t shift into biggest cog.

The low limit screw is too tight. Try loosening a 1/4 turn at a time.

Chain jumps off biggest cog into the spokes.

Two different things could be happening. First scenario, the cable tension is too high. Try loosening the tension at the barrel adjuster. Start with a 1/4 turn at a time. Second (most likely) scenario, the low limit screw is too loose. You will know this is the problem because it will only occur while shifting. Again, start with a 1/4 turn at a time.

Chain is slow shifting to bigger cogs.

The cable tension is too low. Try increasing tension at the barrel adjuster 1/4 turn at a time.

Chain is slow shifting to smaller cogs.

The cable tension is too high. Try decreasing tension at the barrel adjust 1/4 turn at a time.

Chain won’t shift into smallest cog.

The high limit screw is too tight. Try loosening it 1/4 turn at a time.

Chain jumps off smallest cog into the frame.
